Shameless Endorsements
Things that I really, really like:
Technologies
- Wordpress – This site is built in Wordpress, the best open-source publishing platform available on the web (as much as I dislike the API, I am a big fan)
- CodeIgniter — The easiest, simplest, and speediest PHP Development Framework out there. If you’re not already using a framework to develop in, I highly recommend getting started with CodeIgniter.
- HeidiSQL – MySQL GUI client for Windows that I use every single day I come to work.
- TortoiseSVN – Another client I use daily to get stuff done.
- Google Code – Dead simple SVN hosting for public projects.
- PDT for Eclipse — An IDE that contains all of the goodness of Zend Studio without the pain on your wallet.
- Ubuntu Server — We use Ubuntu Server 8.04 for all of our Linux infrastructure needs at the College of Information. It’ s like Debian without the sharp edges.
Other Stuff
- Adopt-a-Greyhound — Greyhounds make the best pets. 1,000’s of greyhounds are put down every year when they can no longer race.
- Real Geeks Ride – As somebody who has been riding to work for two years now, so I can appreciate these IT dudes riding across the country to encourage geeks to bike to work.
- Streetsblog Network — Something I read daily to get the latest news on alternative transportation and sustainable development.
- Mint.com — Like Quicken, but free, simpler, and with a slew of Web 2.0 features. These guys also have a really great blog.
